Bulgaria is a full member of the European Union from January 1st, 2007.

The period February - May was devoted to the first EU Elections for Bulgarian representatives in the European Parliament.

Initiative Committee, chaired by the Vice President Mr. Todor Kavaldjiev (1997-2002) nominated Mrs. Maria Serkedjieva as an independent candidate for the elections.

The idea was raised from the Eurointegration Association, NGO with a broad network from 31 regional clubs in the country. Mrs. Serkedjieva is President of the Association since June 2000.

The Initiative committee was supported by over 13 000 people. This allowed Mrs. Maria Serkedjieva to be the first registered candidate at the Central Election Committee for participation in the EU Elections -  May 2007.

With this campaign Mrs.Serkedjieva set up a new approach for an active position of the civil society, in order to have the possibility to choose the Personality.
